Weird, Creative and Unusual Homes

Weird, Creative & Unusual Homes (and Hotels)

Have you ever dreamed of living in a tiny cottage that seems like it’s straight out of a fairytale? Ever longed to spend a relaxing weekend getaway lounging in a warm and cozy Hobbit hole? Do you love to collect art, crafts and antiques and want to surround yourself with them? If so, read on to take a journey with us into the land of weirdly creative architecture!

Luna Parc: Home and Museum

For artist Ricky Boscarino, Luna Parc is a great masterwork of imagination as well as a place he calls home. Ricky began work on this ongoing labor of love way back in 1989. He started out living in a simple little house of about 600 square feet in Northwestern New Jersey, and over the years it has grown and morphed into a whopping 5,000 square feet! Nearly every inch of the home is filled with Ricky’s incredible ingenuity.

Ricky has dedicated a few decades to his work on Luna Parc and he isn’t done with it yet! Take a peek at how the Parc has grown and expanded over the years, in the video below from Tiny House Giant Journey:

The museum is open to the public on select dates each year, so you could come and see this amazing feast for the eyes for yourself. The artist also has a website and shop, where you can browse through his other (smaller) creations, such as ceramic pots, jewelry and paintings. Ricky works in and with various mediums and materials such as clay, metal, glass, wood and cement.

Seaside Fairytale Cottage

Have you ever dreamed about living in a storybook home in a tranquil island setting? Then do we have the home for you! This absolutely adorable little cottage looks like it was taken right out of a children’s fairytale book. I – love – this – house. The location comes with a picturesque view and occasional visits from passing whales and sea lions. Check out this video below by the folks at Living Big In A Tiny House for a glimpse into how this home went from idea to reality:

This whimsical little abode was built for a man named Bruce Winckler, and it sits along the shores of British Columbia, Canada. Built by the building company Lindcroft Custom Dwellings, it was constructed using locally sourced materials and has incorporated the creative efforts of several local artisans. Including an upstairs loft/bedroom area, this home is a diminutive 600 square feet.

Bruce loves showing off his remarkable little home, bringing smiles to the faces of everyone who visits. And with the idyllic location and gorgeous views, living small has never looked so appealing!

Rainbow Renovation

This property nestled in the Hudson Valley, New York area comes with a brightly decorated bus, chicken coop nook, fish tank, guest quarters and so much more. The owner of this property managed the colossal feat of taking an almost condemned farmhouse from the 1840s and transforming it into an eclectic mish-mosh of creative genius.

And that owner would be someone who goes by the name “Katwise” — as she is known on Etsy. One of the earliest members/sellers on Etsy, Katwise sells her lovingly crafted sweaters and sweater coats (and tutorials) on that platform. This artist’s clothing is as bright, bold and non-conformist in style as the house she lives in is. A truly exceptional individual, Katwise has had the most interesting past, and has even toured with the Grateful Dead. Learn more about her in this video from Tiny House Giant Journey:

From room to room, it’s easy to see how this entry could show up on anyone’s “most creative homes” listing. This incredibly colorful and inventive home mirrors its owner’s sense of childlike fun, and is a true joy to behold!

Hobbit House: a Magical Vacation Getaway

This next entry isn’t technically a “home” in the true sense of the word, but is more like a “home away from home.” Kristie Wolfe is a builder and innovator who has created some of the most interesting and atypical hotel getaway locations ever seen. Her projects include a tropical treehouse in Hawaii and a potato-shaped hotel in Idaho. One of her most popular structures is her Hobbit Inn, located in Chelan, Washington. Have a closer look at it in this video below from Tiny House Giant Journey:

At only 288 square feet this hotel is quite small, but it is actually Kristie’s largest construction so far. After guests make their way up a steep mountain path they are greeted by a bright green round doorway, cobblestones and a magnificent view.

This Hobbit house comes packed with natural wood features, unique, cozy furnishings and loads of tiny, thoughtful details that would make any Hobbit or Lord of the Rings fan feel right at home.

A Shoe-Shaped Lover’s Retreat

This last entry is another cozy little vacation getaway “home away from home”. Located in Nelson, New Zealand, this vacation destination was modeled in the form of a shoe, and is a modest 318 square feet. Intended as a “lover’s retreat”, this extremely unusual hotel room boats such features as gorgeous natural wood furnishings, a lovely spiral staircase and a balcony. More details are below in this video from the team at Living Big In A Tiny House:

Note: the portion of the video that has to do with the shoe-house specifically runs until about halfway through.

The lower portion of the shoe contains only soft, rounded lines (no straight lines or corners), and guests can relax by the fireplace and snuggle on the cushy couch. There should be plenty of opportunity to spend quality time with a loved-one at this locale, since there is no television; nor is there a facility to do any actual cooking. But what is there is quaint, rustic and charming.

This is just a taste of the incredible innovation going on out there in the world of architecture. We’ve taken a look at some creative smaller structures, so how about we take a look at creativity on a much larger scale?
