Repurposing a Wire Fruit Basket

Object #4: Fruit Wire Rack/Basket

My husband bought me one of these handy-dandy wire stand things recently, with the intention that I would use it as a fruit rack/basket. This is the photo on the box, so obviously holding fruit and/or vegetables is this product’s normal intended use:

We have a small kitchen and it turns out we barely have enough room on our counters for the stuff we already have there, so I thought up a different use for it. Then I brainstormed to see what else could be done with a wire basket, if the metal is sturdy enough. If you happen to have or plan to purchase one of these wire racks, the following suggestions might be good alternate uses for it.

It can be used to display your house plants (this is what I wound up using it for):

Or it could serve as a rather elegant towel and toiletry holder for your bathroom:

It could even be used in your living room (or other room) as a convenient place to store objects like remotes, game controllers and books/magazines:

Here are a few more possible uses for this item:

  • Display a collection of Christmas ornaments, Easter eggs, or other holiday-related items.
To spruce up your display place the items on a layer of pretty tissue paper or wrapping paper.
  • Hold warm dinner rolls or freshly baked bread.
  • Display fancy pastries or desserts.
  • Store and keep track of your pet’s tennis balls and other toys.

After I finally decided upon my final use for this basket I decided to do a little searching around to see what others have done in a similar situation. By chance I found this article from a website called Hometalk that details how the author took a hanging wire basket and turned it into a work of art.

Now that’s the type of flexible, creative thinking that I love, that also is a reflection of what this blog is all about!
