Repurposing Clay Flower Pots

Object #2: Clay Flower Pots

For this project you can use any size flower pots, as long as they are the clay-style pots and not the plastic ones. Actually, I’m thinking that the type of pots I have at home are called “terracotta” and not “clay”, but for the sake of brevity I’ll just call them “clay”.

For these projects make sure your pots are clean and free of dirt.
There are a surprising number of things that can be done with clay flower pots, and if you have some laying around from last Fall, simply wash them out, dry them and then let your imagination go wild!

They can be used as a bird bath (larger pots would work much better, but I created this small one as a bit of a joke):

They can be turned upside-down and strung up to create some lovely wind chimes.
In this example I braided 3 different colors of yarn together to string through the small holes in the bottom of the pots. Stringing pretty ribbon through several smaller-style clay pots would also be a good choice. Ideally windchimes should be hung up outside, but since it is currently about 20 degrees F and still winter here, I’ll have to wait to hang these out on my deck:

It was fun painting a bunch of these pots as a small project I did with my daughter. Used as toiletry holders/bins these painted containers can brighten up your bathroom, as I discovered. The pots themselves are good for keeping hair (or other small) accessories organized, and the flower pot round base makes a great soap dish:

You could also use them as a holder for a single candle, or arrange several pots to create a nice eye-pleasing display.
(Please remember to never leave a lit candle unattended though!)  Also, unless you’re in the mood to scrape wads of dried candle wax off of your furniture, you would need to either plug up the holes in the flower pot bottoms or use something non-flammable to place your candle(s) in.  : )

Here are a few more possible uses for this item:

  • Large pots can make great table bases. Either place them right-side up or upside-down, then place a board, tray or some other flat and wide object on top of it.
  • Stack pots of different sizes on top of one another to create a tall herb garden planter setup.
  • I’ve seen lots of adorable clay/terracotta pot projects on Pinterest, where people turn them upside-down and stack them to create lighthouses, snowmen, mushrooms, etc.
  • Use them to store and keep track of your pet’s treats and small toys.
